interview | peyton list

Peyton List made her mark in Hollywood at a young age. From 27 Dresses to Jessie and now Cobra Kai — we have either grown up with this talented actor or watched her grow up on our screens. There is truly little doubt about List’s excellence. List now conquers the beauty realm, with her sustainable and playful makeup brand, Pley Beauty. The 24-year-old actor has proven several times that there is little that she can’t achieve. Peyton List now joins Schön! Magazine in an exclusive conversation about Cobra Kai, her nights out and more.
How are you?
I’m good! I’m in an empty room right now as I just got to LA from working in New York all summer. I am moving into a new space — it’s been hectic in the best way.
What were you shooting in New York? Anything you can tell us?
Yeah. The press release just came out. It’s a romance movie for HBO Max [B-Loved] coming out on Valentine’s Day.

You are killing it with Cobra Kai right now, however, my childhood was Jessie. As a fan of the show — I would love to know the story behind your most memorable day on set.
[laughs] That’s a good question. Probably one of the first days because it was so new. I had never worked in LA before. It was my first time filming on a soundstage in Hollywood, it was at Hollywood Center Studios, where they filmed I Love Lucy and all these classic multi-cam
shows. It was pretty intimidating but so exciting. Honestly… looking back at it I view it as intimidating, but as a kid, you’re not intimidated by anything, it’s just so exciting and all play. I don’t think I understood that I was getting paid to do a job. It was just so fun for us and we all became best friends. I think one of the most memorable days was meeting everyone for the first time and screen-testing with them. Realising that these are going to be the people I’m going to be with for the next however long the show goes.
You started your career at a young age. What was the most valuable lesson that Hollywood taught you?
Really soaking everything in and never getting complacent. Always stay passionate and just learn from everyone around me. On every set, I take something away from someone. I didn’t go to college and I just kind of stayed working. I chose that path and kind of made that gamble. I feel like because I have been learning on set and getting that experience, it’s been my own version of whatever school would have been for me.

You have mentioned that you have a closet full of clothes that you take away from your TV shows and Movies. What’s your favourite item in this ‘closet’?
That’s a good question. I mean, what I did love was that any time we referenced any kind of brand, it has to truly be the brand; it can’t be a knock-off version. So any time I am referencing a piece on a show it is truly that and I think that is one of the most fun parts. I love fittings and getting to play dress-up, and I think a lot of the actors dread fittings. I know a lot of the boys on Cobra Kai [don’t like fittings]…. There are a couple that like it. But getting to create that part of the character… I think clothing is such a huge part of it and fashion is such a huge part. I don’t have a specific item that I really loved, but there have been so many beautiful pieces.
Talking about brands — you have your very own makeup brand called Pley Beauty. What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty is so much of an attitude, I would say. Just how you are feeling on the inside and reflecting from within, which sounds so cheesy, but I really do believe it. It’s about inner work and just healing from the inside. I guess after doing so much skincare and inner work during COVID… we were kind of developing the brand during that. Then coming out of it [COVID-19], we just wanted to play with colour. Making it clean and sustainable but also just sort of fun.
Who is the person you imagine wearing Pley Beauty?
Just a free spirit. Sort of a person who is willing to take risks and just have fun with beauty — so like just glowy and fun. Honestly, I love going out and dancing. You can have a costume on your face! I love going into costumes and just dressing up. That’s kind of what inspired Pley Beauty.

Talking about dancing and getting dressed up — Is that what your nights out look like?
Yeah, even when I was unpacking things at my house, I was like, “This closet makes no sense.” I’ll just buy things for when I go out with friends. I just want to look kind of crazy [laughs] and wear something super colourful and fun. Just going all out. I think because it is a little bit rarer now that we do get to do it, whenever we do I’m just like, “screw it!”. For my job, I get to play Halloween and dress up all the time, so I would rather make all of the time that.
What is the most experimental outfit that you have worn on a night out?
I had this long clear coat with pink fur on the collar and pink fur at the bottom. I wore it with this leopard playsuit and these thigh-high boots. I put gems on my face, glitter on my face, and just went out dancing. I wore sunglasses too at night. I had so much fun going out and dancing that night.

Have you ever changed any of the characters that you play in real life?
Yeah, sometimes I’m like, “Damn! If she can do it, why can’t I? Shit! I need to channel some of this. ” I definitely do have that, where I’m like, “I need to figure out this situation, I need to have whatever that girl has.” A lot of the time, since Cobra Kai is the most recent, the character on the show is just so fearless. She is willing to spite anyone at any given moment, and I’m just so the opposite of that. I’m like, “I need to channel that right now.”
Talking about Cobra Kai — did you have to learn karate for the role?
Yeah, we have this trainer. I never thought I would ever learn karate. Even when I auditioned, it wasn’t a part of the character. We have trained a lot in the past few seasons with our stunt doubles and stunt coordinators.
Have you used karate in real life yet?
Only on my brothers [laughs] because they were giving me shit when I came home, saying: “No you can’t do any of it! Come on.” I feel like I can actually fight them properly now, which is a dream come true. I’m so much more aware of what’s a weapon now; “oh shoot this shoe can come off and really be a great weapon. I can’t run in these heels… at least I can throw them at someone.” [laughs]

Mentioning your love for skincare and downtime. What does your downtime look like right now?
This morning I went and did yoga. I just like being silent and kind of waking up in heated yoga. I just love it. It’s been a lot of cleaning and organising because I came back from working away for months. I just love purging and getting rid of things and sort of re-evaluating the mess I left behind and the mess that I am bringing back. Just figuring out what’s changed. I’m just travelling so much. I’m about to go to Vancouver for a show for 4 months, so I’m dropping everything here after being here for only like 2 weeks. It’s always just me trying to find the balance and calm whilst still seeing my friends and family while I’m home. But I really just love being around people and eating good food. Just trying to do some face masks and some yoga in between.
How do you stay sane with all this travelling? I feel like I would go crazy if I had to travel that much.
Oh, I do! [laughs] I do lose it. I feel like I used to put on a facade or put a lot of time into whatever it is. At this point, whenever I’m not in character, not having to go for hair and makeup — I’m just completely natural because it just feels so nice. That is why I have to meditate, do yoga, or grounding things to remember to be present. At all moments of the day, I was finding myself pinching myself, saying “this is real you’re here.” Also just check myself and remember to be grateful because this is my dream and what I wanted to do for so long. I was just like, “okay, don’t get so caught up in it that you just get so lost and are no longer present.”
What’s next for you?
I am packing up again to go to the next show that I am doing in Vancouver through November. I’m just planning on that — everything else is unplanned. I’m a pretty spontaneous person. I have a couple of other projects filmed… B-Loved is coming out after that. This feels like a pretty consistent time in my life just because I have jobs lined up. That is a nice feeling because for so long when I was finishing up Jessie and working with Disney, it was like, ‘What do I want to do now?’. It was such an open time. This seems a little more planned.

Cobra Kai season 5 is streaming now on Netflix.

interview | emmy raver-lampman

With talents that stretch across theatre and film, it’s safe to say Emmy Raver-Lampman is a powerhouse. The American actress and singer has been involved in some of cultures most celebrated projects — from Hair to Wicked to Hamilton. The performance that has most people affected, though, is her role as Allison Hargreeves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy.
Schön! Magazine chats with Emmy Raver-Lampman to discuss the series, her goals for the future, representation in Hollywood, and more.
You invited Architectural Digest into your beautiful home last year. What is your current favourite feature/part of the house?
My favourite part of our house is I think I’d have to say the kitchen. I used to giggle at that phrase. You know, the kitchen is the heart of a home. No matter how many parties we have, and how many people we have over, everybody always seems to gather in the kitchen, sit around the island, play board games, have delicious cocktails and cook delicious meals and share food and stories I think also kitchen was probably the biggest part of the house that we worked on with like doing the new tiles and the new shelving and it was really joy to make that space our own. I think that is now reflected in how everybody just wants to hang out in it all the time.
You are a very creative person who has impressive crafting skills. Any new projects you’re working on? If not, what is the project that you are the most proud of?
I’m extremely proud of all of my projects. I try to find things that inspire me, things that scare me, things that challenge me. I work really hard to find things that I know which are going to stretch me and will allow me to grow as an artist. So everything that I’ve done I stand behind, look back on and remember specific things that I learned from every project that I’ve worked on.
But I think you know the thing that’s out in the world right now that’s coming out is Central Park this season three of Central Park and Apple TV plus just dropped last week. There’s now four episodes out and it’s an amazing season. I’m so honoured and proud to be a part of that unbelievable cast and group of creatives. Now finally after an amazing year of a ton of hard work from the entire cast and the amazing creative team.

I heard a rumour that you have traveled to over 50 countries — which country was your favourite and why?
Oh man, picking a favourite place I’ve been is a really, really hard one. But I would have to say India. I lived there for a year when I was 10 years old and so far it is the most unbelievable country I’ve ever experienced from the culture and the music. The food, the architecture and the people just go to the religious festivals in the parades and it is a way for that culture and country to celebrate vibrant colour and life. It was unbelievably sad it changed my life living there as a 10 year old. It really really changed my life, it was an experience that I will never forget. I am desperately trying to get back for a visit.
Let’s talk about one of my favourite TV-series, The Umbrella Academy. The last season of the show has been confirmed. What has been your favourite part of the entire journey? How does it feel knowing that the show is coming to an end?
My favourite part about the show are the lessons that I’ve learned about myself working on this show and in this industry. I’ve never been in front of a camera until I was asked to portray Alison Hargreaves. I’ve learned so much about acting in this industry and acting for the camera. I’ve learned about myself and being a woman of colour in this industry and what that means and I’m just forever grateful and that is what I consider as the most important lessons that I’ve learned.
Ever since I’m really getting Academy coming to an end is definitely bittersweet. I am grateful that we get to go into a fourth season knowing that it’s the final season. A lot of shows don’t get to be as lucky and don’t get the advance notice that they’re going into their last season. I also appreciate that we get to have a proper ending to the story. These characters and fans deserve that! I’m already dreading the last day on set, because I know I’m going to be an emotional wreck. I’m sure it is going to be an amazing season and I’m really excited to go back and wrap it all up in a beautifully dysfunctional bow in true Umbrella Academy fashion.

The audience has seen Allison’s personality shift each season, with season 3 being her villain era. Which season was the most fun for you to play/watch?
Season three was definitely the most fun season for me to work on. I really enjoyed it! Not only enjoyed it- but actually loved Alison’s journey in season three and her moving through her grief and traumas. And she teeters into a villainous era and I loved that. Really enjoyed her arc in season three but season two will always hold a special place in my heart because of Alison’s journey and her time she spent in the 60s, as a civil rights organizer. Also there were scenes in season two, that I will never forget filming like the sit in at the diner. I’m so grateful that I had those experiences as this show got to put those very real moments of African American History in front of millions and millions of eyes.
I think as a whole if I’m looking at Allison’s arc from start to finish, I would definitely have to say, season three was definitely a journey that I enjoyed going on with her. I feel incredibly honoured to be playing Allison Hargreaves and to be completely honest, it was an experience that I never even thought was a possibility for me, because of the lack of representation when I was growing up in this space. It still feels very surreal and I’m pinching myself all the time. I’m taking every experience as a huge opportunity to learn and grow more. It also opens more doors and provides opportunities for more representation in every space that I enter and it’s really exciting to be part of that transformation. I’ve been able to be Alison Hargreaves in Umbrella Academy and it is so sad to see her go. Still I feel grateful to know all these characters will live on forever.

I personally started the show at 15 years old — it was great to see WOC representation in such an iconic superhero role. How does it feel for you to be the representation that Hollywood lacked?
That feels really cliche to say but I did not see this for myself as a career possibility. I wake up some days and it just still doesn’t feel real that I get to go to work and be a superhero. Also and not only a superhero but a female superhero, a superhero of colour, and that is just so freakin cool! I feel truly deeply and profoundly honoured.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I get this question a lot and I honestly think if I had a superpower, I would keep Allison’s . I think it is one of the strongest powers a superhero could have. When properly understood and used correctly, a whole lot of amazing things can be done with her power.

Your acting debut was on Broadway, and you were part of the original Hamilton cast! So I have to ask — what is your all-time favourite Broadway show?
I always have a hard time answering this question so I would definitely keep the rumour power 100%. When I think about shows, what sticks out to me and what I think I remember the most is specific performances. There are women stuck and amber in my mind in specific performances as they changed and moved me in a way so I remember those more than I remember shows as a whole. I remember Audra McDonald’s performance, Heather Hadley’s performance, and Aida. There are certain songs like Sunday from Sunday in the Park with George is one of my favourite songs but like it’s not my favourite show, so it’s tricky. It is impossible to narrow it down to one but I can shout out some of my favourites: Ragtime, I eat a bloody bloody Andrew Jackson, Strange Loop. I know it’s cliche because I was in it and maybe I’m biased but I do think Hamilton is a brilliant piece of work and a wonderful musical. I’ve seen it several times. Failla is another one I adored, Spring Awakening was also amazing.
Also think it is worth saying that some of the most unbelievable theatrical experiences I have ever had have not been on Broadway. There are some unbelievable off Broadway shows that I’ve seen in New York that have also changed my life. This is the shortest list I could give you! Oh, and I’ve just remembered Peter and the Starcatcher. See I can’t narrow it down! It’s really hard because I’ve seen a lot of great theatre in my life.

You once mentioned that you used to skip university classes as a teenager in order to explore New York City. Any story from that era of your life that you would like to share with us?
Oh, man, my rebellious college years. Once I was in New York going to school when Spring Awakening came out and a couple of times I would skip a class to go stand in line for the lottery tickets. I did that on occasion until I finally won the lottery and got to see the show. There were a couple auditions that I skipped class for. I would pretend to be sick and like to render this audition then go to my next class.
I think a lot of the reasons that I was skipping class was to do something related to theatre in New York, whether it was trying to get a ticket to a show or auditioning for a show, going to an open call. I definitely also skipped a couple classes to go to open calls, because those users show up first thing in the morning, and then you wait around all day and hope that they can see you. But I will say in my defence, usually I was given a class to attempt to start my career as an actor in New York. So I was skipping class, but I was getting life experiences.

What are you looking forward to these days?
What am I looking forward to these days? Honestly, I’m not a big planner when it comes to long term goals. I’m not a five year tenure, planner kind of person. I just really try to take each day as it comes and celebrate each moment and each opportunity that I have. I’m of course excited to get more experiences and work under my belt so that I can continue to grow and learn and change and explore myself with other roles and other opportunities. These days, I’m always looking forward to the next time I can travel and experience another country and another culture. I’m excited to head back to umbrella for our fourth and final season and see that family again and all together for the last time. I’m just excited to feel very grateful to have the life that I have. And I just take it one day at a time and I’m just excited that I get to do what I love for a living. Yes, what a gift!

Whether she’s slipping into the regal poise of Queen Elizabeth I in ‘Becoming Elizabeth’ or diving into the stylised world of ‘Dinner for Five – Killer for One’, Alicia von Rittberg has a rare ability to vanish into her roles. Frolicking in Fendi for her Schön! 48 digital cover, she opens up about her latest work, the ever-evolving nature of her craft, and how fashion helps shape the identities of the characters she portrays.
Her performances are layered, immersive, and intuitive. And yet, acting wasn’t part of the original plan. With early roots in Hip-Hop dance and later studies in corporate management and economics, von Rittberg’s journey has always been one of balancing artistic instinct with intellectual grounding. Now 31, the German actor has seamlessly crossed between national and international productions — from starring alongside Brad Pitt in ‘Fury’ to her breakout role in the acclaimed German drama ‘Charité’. Her method is deeply felt. “You read something and just feel connected,” she explains. “And, later, you realise it reflects something you’re working through in life.” She recalls a coach telling her that the right roles “find you,” an idea she’s come to embrace.
Off-camera, von Rittberg’s appreciation for fashion mirrors her love of storytelling. She finds herself drawn to heritage houses that embody both tradition and innovation, singling out Fendi as a source of inspiration. “Maintaining quality and tradition while staying visionary — that’s an incredible balance,” she observes. If she were to design a collection herself, she’d marry historical silhouettes with modern tailoring—a vision clearly influenced by her time spent in costume. “I’ve learned to appreciate craftsmanship, beautiful fabrics and the difference it makes when something is made with real care.”
Rather than chasing dream roles, von Rittberg’s artistic compass is guided by curiosity. “I don’t have a specific character I’m dying to play,” she says. “I’m more interested in understanding the human behind the public figure. What makes someone the way they are?” That thoughtful, human-centred approach extends far beyond her professional work. When asked what makes her feel schön (beautiful), her answer is simple, yet profound. “I feel schön when I can make someone else happy; when I can make someone feel seen.”

‘Dinner for Five – Killer for One’ will stream on Amazon Prime later this year.
